NMBT and the National Lottery invest in educating product owners
Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism together with the Municipality’s Department of Economic Development and Recreational Services: Tourism is taking the opportunity given to them by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) by utilising a portion of the R859 500 awarded to them for greening and sustainable tourism, to educate tourism product owners on topics such as sustainable tourism and fair-trade, in preparation of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, through workshops.

Mark Twain and Cecil John Rhodes, among other well-known travellers, gave public lectures and stayed at the Grand Hotel, the Port Elizabeth Club and the Edward Hotel.

It is believed that David Livingstone stayed in Port Elizabeth briefly to stock up on supplies before moving inland.

During the diamond rush era at Kimberley, Freeman Cobb started the first coaching service between Kimberley and Port Elizabeth. He died at the age of 46, and was buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

The famous Apple Express antique steam train journeys to the quaint village of Thornhill and passes over the Van Staden’s River Bridge, the highest narrow-gauge railway bridge in the world.
