KOREA REPUBLIC TO PLAY PRACTICE MATCH IN NELSON MANDELA BAY

The Korea Republic National Team is set to play a practice match against Bay United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Thursday, 14 January 2010. The practice match, scheduled to start at 11:00 forms part of the Korea Republic’s Training camp in South Africa which will also see them playing against Zambia at the Rand Stadium on Saturday 9 January 2010 and against Platinum Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Tuesday,12 January 2010.

Port Elizabeth had the first Transitional Local Council in South Africa and the first democratically elected mayor. Much of the early local government negotiations were brokered here.
The Nazareth Apostolic Church in Zwide is one of the main churches where most of the unrest victims from 1984 onwards were buried.
Njoli Square, which used to be one of the main gathering places of mass marches and confrontations between black youths and police, is today a hive of activity and business, with street vendors selling their wares. It is also currently one of the biggest transport centres for the community.
A memorial headstone was laid on 21 March 1987 in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage, for the 27 black “Freedom Fighters” who were killed in the Langa Massacre.
The first student resistance took place in 1976 at the KwaZakhele High School, which led to subsequent arrests by Security Police at the Algoa Park Police Station. Ten of the 43 students became state witnesses, and the rest were sent to Robben Island or detained at Algoa Park. Most of the prisoners have, since their release, become prominent black leaders in the African National Congress (ANC).
